New York Islanders Sign Joe Callahan

Callahan The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Joe Callahan to a one-year, two-way contract. Last season, Callahan was one of the top defensemen for the Portland Pirates finishing the regular season with a goal and 23 assists in 65 games. In the Calder Cup Playoffs, the Pirates made it to the Eastern Conference Finals and Callahan led the team defense in scoring with a goal and 11 assists for 12 points in 18 games.

The Brockton, MA native has played in a total of 298 career AHL games and registered seven goals and 52 assists for 59 points to go along with 290 penalty minutes. Since 2003-04, Callahan has spent parts of four seasons with the Springfield Falcons, Utah Grizzlies and San Antonio Rampage.

Callahan also played three seasons for Yale University compiling 11 goals and 33 assists for a total of 44 points. In his junior season, Callahan led all Yale defensemen in scoring with 20 points and received an honorable mention in the All-ECAC Selections.

Callahan was originally drafted by Phoenix in the third round (70th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
